About

The Museum of Art and Peace was established in 2011 as a project of Germantown Mennonite Church (GMC) and seeks to promote visual creativity and ideas of peacemaking and social justice with a public program of changing exhibitions and projects that interact with the Church’s meeting space.

Dating back to 1683, Germantown Mennonite Church is the oldest Mennonite congregation in North America, and has consistently been at the forefront of the Anabaptist traditions of peacemaking and social justice. Currently GMC is one of a handful of Mennonite congregations leading the way on the full inclusion of the queer community in all aspects of the life of the church.

The Museum of Art and Peace is directed by a volunteer committee of congregants who are arts professionals. Exhibitions change quarterly, and are programmed with the following criteria as guidelines:

1. Art about peace / peacemaking

2. Art dealing with themes of social justice

3. Art with Biblical/liturgical imagery/themes

4. Work by artists who identify as Mennonite or come from a Mennonite background
